17 August 2013 - Edinburgh Zoo

On to Edinburgh for a fun-filled Saturday! First stop the highly-rated zoo, on Corstophine Road (Cor-stoff-een, not Corster-feen)....

We'd booked the tickets online so went straight to the front of the queue, feeling just a little guilty in doing so (same way we felt yesterday at Stirling Castle)....but just a wee bit....

Edinburgh Zoo has a very good reputation, and overall we were impressed. The main factor being "Did we enjoy it?" And despite the wildly fluctuating weather, yes, we loved it. The meerkats played their part well, and took it in turns to pop out of their burrow and look around for predators....

But apparently they spend most of their day doing this instead....playing as a family. Looks like one big furry dogpile to us.  BUNDLE!

This, believe it or not, is a male Giant Panda, named Guan Huang, or Gang Bang, or something similar.  He was asleep, which is what he does best.  The female, Tian Tian, may be pregnant so there was no viewing allowed of her indoor pen. You have to book time slots to see the pandas, it's free but you MUST book beforehand.

Same lazy panda. Late on parade every day, he needs shooting....

The zoo is dated in places and thoroughly modern in others. The Koala World area is great, with a full biography of each individual animal. This one is called Barry.

In between two torrential showers we found the big cats, and this super-lazy leopard. It's a hard life.

The lions had just been fed, and here is the male doing a runner with a massive chunk of meat.

And here's his other half daring the watching humans to try, just try, to steal hers....

It's a monkey.  Baby Monkey. Sadly not riding backwards on a pig, but it IS a baby monkey.

The penguin pools are great with viewing possible but above and below water.

Sam said "That thing is fat!". You need a thick skin to deal with that kind of criticism....

So overall we award Edinburgh Zoo seven out of ten.  Sort out the signage (many of which pointed you in completely the wrong direction), get hold of some more active pandas (there must be millions of 'em in the jungle), and get the baby monkeys riding pigs, and you'll have cracked it.  We recommend you visit and see this charming place for yourselves!
